London: Police in Ireland on Sunday said officers had arrested a man who entered "an unauthorised area" of Shannon airport, as social media footage appeared to show a man climbing onto a US Air Force plane.

The Shannon hub is controversial in Ireland for facilitating the movement of US troops, providing logistical support to operations abroad.

The footage posted on X showed a figure apparently on top of what media reports said was a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft at the airport in western Ireland.

The intruder dressed in black appeared to be striking the fuselage with an object.

"On Saturday 11th April 2026 an adult male entered an unauthorised area of Shannon Airport," a police statement said.

"An adult male was arrested for alleged criminal damage," it said, adding that the suspect was in his forties.

He remained in police custody on Sunday, police added.
