Doha, Qatar: The State of Qatar strongly condemned the Islamic Republic of Iran's targeting of the Saudi tanker (SIDR) while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and resulted in fatalities among the tanker's crew, considering this a blatant violation of the rules of international law and freedom of maritime navigation, as well as a flagrant breach of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the State of Qatar's categorical rejection of using the Strait of Hormuz as a means of exerting pressure.

In this context, the Ministry called for the Strait to be reopened unconditionally, stressing that freedom of navigation through this vital waterway is an established principle that is non-negotiable. It further noted that the continued closure of the Strait puts the vital interests of the countries of the region and the global economy at risk.

The Ministry stressed the need to halt Iran's unjustified attacks on the property of sisterly countries, while reaffirming the State of Qatar's full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its support for any measures the Kingdom takes to safeguard its property.
